Using a VOIP Internet Phone in Iraq or Afghanistan

( Note: will expand on this topic when better information is available.)

Soldiers may no longer be able, in some locations in Iraq or Afghanistan, to use a VoIP phone and Skype to make calls with families back home due to the non-secure nature of using the Internet.

In summary, here is how you would setup VoIP to call a solider in Iraq or Afghanistan:

  • Connect and setup a VoIP phone (hardware or software) to each computer
  • Sign up for a free Skype account
  • If calling home to a phone, buy some SkypeOut minutes (very cheap)
  • Log-in, tweak the settings, and talk to each other over the Internet!
