Setting Up Video Instant Messaging in Iraq or Afghanistan

(Note: will expand on this topic when better information is available.)

Soldiers may no longer be able, in some locations in Iraq or Afghanistan, to use Yahoo, AOL and MSN IM programs to setup video chat sessions with webcams on either end to communicate with families back home due to the non-secure nature of using the Internet and IM.

In summary, here is how you would setup video calling to a solider in Iraq or Afghanistan:

  • Connect and setup a webcam on each computer, one at home and one in Iraq
  • Sign up for Windows Live Messenger (aka MSN) - works better than Yahoo or AOL
  • Create an account profile, one for each person
  • Log-in, tweak the settings, and see and talk to each other in person!
